8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)

2 tablespoons oil

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)

Salt to taste

1 onion, finely chopped

2 green chilies, finely chopped

1/4 cup roasted peanuts or cashews (optional)

Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Lemon wedges for serving


Cut the bread slices into small squares or cubes and set aside.

Heat oil in a pan or skillet over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter, then add cumin seeds and sauté for a few seconds until aromatic.

Add chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until onions turn golden brown.

Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.

Add the bread pieces to the pan and toss until they are coated evenly with the spice mixture.

If using, add roasted peanuts or cashews and mix with the bread.

Cook for about 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the bread turns crispy and golden brown.

Turn off the heat and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Serve hot with lemon wedges on the side for an extra kick of tanginess.
